Owner Questions

Should I Just Build My Business Website With AI?

November 2026 7 min read

Type a few sentences about your business into one of the new AI website builders and a few minutes later you have a site: headline, sections, photos, colours, even some text. For a business owner who has been putting off a website for years, it can feel like the problem just solved itself. So it's a fair question, and we get it often: why pay anyone, when the machine will do it?

We use AI tools every day in our own work, so this isn't a lecture against them. It's an honest map of what they do well, where they fall short today, and how to decide whether one is right for you.

What AI builders are genuinely good at

They are excellent at the first draft. Getting from a blank screen to something you can react to is the hardest step for many owners, and an AI builder does it in minutes. Seeing a layout, a colour scheme and a few sections makes it much easier to say what you like and what you don't.

They're good at standard pages for standard businesses: a simple brochure site with a home page, a services page, an about page and a contact form. They write passable general copy. And for a brand-new venture testing an idea, a quick AI site is a perfectly reasonable placeholder while you find out whether the business has legs.

Where they fall short

The weaknesses aren't about looks. Most AI-generated sites look tidy. The trouble is in the parts you can't see in a preview.

  • They know nothing you didn't tell them. The AI doesn't know that you're the only company in Chino Valley that does same-day well pump repair, or that half your customers are retirees who prefer to call, or which three questions every customer asks. It fills the gaps with generic text, and generic text is exactly what customers skim past and what search engines have no reason to prefer.
  • The words are plausible, not true. AI writing can state things confidently that are wrong: services you don't offer, a guarantee you never made, an invented number of years in business. Everything it writes about your business needs checking, line by line.
  • Everyone gets the same site. Builders draw from the same patterns, so sites made with them tend to look and read alike. If your competitors use the same tool, your site blends in at the exact moment a customer is comparing.
  • Local search needs local detail. Being found for 'electrician Prescott Valley' depends on specific, accurate information about where you work and what you do, consistent with your Google Business Profile. An AI-written page that mentions the town once in a generic sentence doesn't do much.
  • The hard parts are still hard. Bookings, payments, quote calculators, customer logins and integrations with the software you already use need real engineering and real testing. A forum thread of web developers we read this year summed up the consensus fairly: fine for a simple brochure site, risky the moment money or personal data are involved.

Does Google penalise AI-written content?

Not for being AI-written. Google's published position is that it rewards helpful, reliable content regardless of how it was produced, and that content made primarily to manipulate rankings is against its policies however it was made. The practical problem is not a penalty. It's that thin, generic text written about no business in particular is unhelpful, and unhelpful pages don't rank well no matter who wrote them.

Our article on E-E-A-T for local businesses explains what Google looks for instead: first-hand experience, real expertise and evidence you're a genuine business. That's the part only you can supply.

The ownership question

Before you build anywhere, check what you'll own. Many AI builders are hosted platforms: the site exists only on their service, you pay monthly, and if you stop paying or the company changes direction, the site goes with it. Some let you export the code; many don't, or export something that doesn't work elsewhere. Make sure the domain name is registered in your own name, not the builder's, so you can always point it somewhere else.

A simple way to decide

An AI builder is a reasonable choice if most of these are true:

  1. You're testing a new business idea and need something online this week.
  2. You only need a few simple pages and a contact form, with no bookings or payments.
  3. You have time to rewrite every line in your own words and check every claim.
  4. You're comfortable that the site may need replacing once the business grows.

It's likely to cost you more than it saves if the website is meant to bring in most of your work, if you compete with established local businesses for search, if you need anything involving money, schedules or customer data, or if you know you won't have time to maintain and improve it.

Using AI well, whichever route you take

If you build it yourself, use AI as an assistant rather than an author. Ask it to draft, then replace the generic parts with the specifics: the towns you actually serve, the jobs you actually do, the questions customers actually ask you, and photos of your actual work. Read every page aloud. If a sentence could appear on any company's site, rewrite it until it could only appear on yours.

If you hire someone, ask how they use AI. A good answer sounds like 'to speed up the parts that don't need judgement, so more of your budget goes on the parts that do'. A worrying answer is a designer who generates your site with the same tool you could have used yourself and charges for the privilege, which is worth checking for the same reasons we gave in who is actually building your website.

If you've already built a site with AI and want to know whether it's doing its job, our free website audit scans your site's speed, mobile setup, local search signals and security in about a minute, and explains every finding in plain English. Sometimes the honest answer is that it's fine for now. If you'd like it rewritten in your own voice, our copywriting service starts with a conversation, not a prompt.
