How to Get More Google Reviews Without Being Weird About It

January 2026 5 min read

Look at the top-ranked businesses in almost any Quad Cities category and you'll find twenty to fifty genuine reviews. Look at the ones on page two and you'll find three. The gap is almost never about service quality. It's that one group asks and the other assumes good work speaks for itself.

Timing is most of it. The window for asking is the moment the customer is visibly happy — the job walkthrough, the handover, the meal they just complimented. A request sent three weeks later, when the feeling has faded, converts at a fraction of the rate.

Make the ask a link, not an instruction. 'Search for us on Google and leave a review' loses people at every step. A short link that opens the review form directly, sent by text while you're standing there, removes all of them. Google provides this link in your profile.

Ask in person first, then follow with the link. A verbal request followed by a text converts dramatically better than a cold text, because the customer already agreed.

Respond to everything, including the good ones. Responses are visible to every future reader and they're a freshness signal. A two-sentence reply that names the specific job is enough.

Negative reviews are less dangerous than most owners fear. A wall of nothing but five stars reads as suspicious; a four-point-eight average with a thoughtful response to the one complaint reads as real. Respond calmly, address the substance, and offer to take it offline. You are writing for the hundred people who will read it later, not the one person who wrote it.

What you cannot do is offer anything of value in exchange. It violates Google's policies, risks the profile, and the reviews it produces sound exactly like what they are.
